As a professional detailer, I've seen my fair share of dirty cars. But did you know that your car could be dirtier than a toilet seat? It's not a pleasant thought, but the truth is that cars can harbor a lot of germs and bacteria, some of which can be harmful to your health.
Here are some sources and reasons why your car might be dirtier than a toilet seat:
A study conducted by CarRentals.com found that the average car steering wheel has four times more germs than a public toilet seat. The study tested various surfaces in rental cars and found that the steering wheel had an average of 629 colony-forming units (CFUs) of bacteria per square centimeter, compared to just 172 CFUs on a toilet seat.
Another study conducted by the University of Arizona found that the average car interior has more than 700 different types of bacteria, including some that can cause illness. The study also found that the areas of the car with the highest levels of bacteria were the steering wheel, gear shift, and radio buttons.
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has published research showing that car carpets can contain a significant amount of harmful bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. These bacteria can cause a range of health problems, from skin infections to gastrointestinal illnesses.
The NCBI has also published research showing that the air inside a car can contain high levels of particulate matter and other pollutants, which can have negative effects on respiratory health.
So, what can you do to keep your car clean and healthy? Here are some tips:
Clean your car regularly, both inside and out. Use a microfiber cloth and a gentle cleaning solution to wipe down surfaces, and vacuum the carpets and seats to remove dirt and debris.
Avoid eating or drinking in your car, as this can introduce bacteria and other contaminants.
Use an air purifier in your car to help remove pollutants from the air.
Consider using a UV sterilizer to kill bacteria and other germs on surfaces.
By taking these steps, you can help keep your car clean and healthy, and avoid the potentially harmful effects of a dirty car. Stay safe and stay clean!
