What Is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is a process in detailing that involves restoring the surface of a vehicle's paint to remove imperfections, such as swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation. The process typically involves the following steps:

Wash: The vehicle is first washed with a high-quality car shampoo and water to remove any loose dirt or debris from the surface.

Decontamination: Removing environmental fallout on the paint will ensure polishing goes as smoothly as possible. This process is done with tar, iron, and mineral deposit removers, as well as, a clay bar.

Inspection: The vehicle is then inspected for any imperfections in the paint, such as swirl marks, scratches, or oxidation.

Paint Measurements: Measuring the paint on the vehicle is extremely important, so the detailer will know what they can and can not do in regards to defect removal.

Polishing: A polishing compound is applied to the surface of the vehicle using a machine polisher. The compound works to remove a thin layer of clear coat from the surface, which can help to remove imperfections and restore the surface to a smooth, glossy finish.

Heavy Cutting Compound: If the imperfections in the paint are more severe, a heavy cutting compound may be used first to remove a larger amount of clear coat before moving on to a finer polishing compound.

Fine Polishing Compound: Once the majority of imperfections have been removed, a finer polishing compound is used to refine the finish and restore the shine to the paint.

Finishing: A final finishing polish is applied to the surface to enhance the gloss and depth of the paint.

Protection: A wax, sealant, or coating is applied to the surface to protect the paint from further damage and enhance the shine of the finish.

Inspection: The vehicle is then inspected again to ensure that all imperfections have been removed and that the surface has been restored to a smooth, glossy finish.

Paint correction is a complex process that requires skill and experience to perform correctly. It can help to restore a vehicle's paint to its original condition and improve its overall appearance. By following the proper paint correction process, detailers can help keep their customers' vehicles looking great and protected from further damage.
