When you wash your car in the driveway or parking lot, the soap together with the dirt, grime, grease, and oil washes from your car and flows into nearby storm drains. These can run directly into lakes, rivers, or streams. Some soaps may also contain phosphates, which can cause excess algae to grow in local waterways. Washing and having the run off go into storm drains is also against EPA regulations.
So what do you do? You can purchase a water reclamation mat, and dispose of the run off in a sanitary sewer drain. Another option is using a waterless or rinse less wash system. Lastly, have a professional do it for you.
I've personally seen numerous detailers washing out in the open and their runoff is going directly into sewer drains. That begs the question, if they didn't research the proper disposal of the run off, what else have they not educated themselves about?
Food for thought.
Happy detailing! 😀
